Bridget GLEESON was born on 30 March 1885 in Garyyard, just outside of Silvermines in County Tipperary, Ireland and was a daughter of James GLEESON & Ellen HERBERT
Bridget was Baptized on 31 March 1885 and her sponsors were James GLEESON and Bridget GLEESON. It is unclear who these people are. Could James be the grandfather and Bridget an Aunt of the new born Bridget?
Dan SULLIVAN was baptised on May 11th in County Cork, Ireland and was a son of Abby and Owen(Eugene) O'SULLIVAN Dan dropped the "O" from SULLIVAN when he came to the USA. It is believed his brothers retained the "O" in their names.
Dan and Bridget would good naturely kid each other about their birth counties of Cork and Tipperary.
From the April 14, 1930 census record, we know this family was living at 610 Russia Ave., in San Francisco, California. Both Dan and Bridget imigrated to the USA in 1911, per the census records.
From the 1920 census we find Bridget and Dan living at 107 Fillmore
in San Francisco and they rented. Dan is age 30, a salesman at a
bakery. He arrived in the USA in 1913. Bridget is 28, she arrived in
the USA in 1910. Both were born in Ireland and their parents were born
in Ireland
In 1930, Dan listed his age as 40 and Bridget listed her age as 39. This
would mean Bridget was born in 1890 or 1891. We know this is not correct,
since she was older than her brother James who was born in either 1888 or
1890. Probably Bridget didn't want to admit she was older than Dan to the
census taker. Dan was listed as a Stevedore and Dayworker on the 1930
census, and they are living at 610 Russia Avenue, with a value of $5,000 and they own a radio.
In 1940, the family is now living at 3741 Army Street(now known
as Ceasar Chavez), San Francisco. Their home is now valued at $6,000.
Dan is listed as age 50 and a restaurant proprietor, born in
Ireland. Bridget is age 49 and born in Ireland. Also in the
residence are their 3 daughters, age 19, age 17 and age 15. Also in the
residence are Dorothy Walen, age 9, Joan Walen, age 4, Kathleen
Gibbons, age 2 and Ellen VanderLieth, age 53. They are all listed as
Lodgers. All the children are listed as born in California, and Ellen
is listed as born in Ireland. It is believed that Dorothy, Joan and
Kathleen are foster children. Ellen is obviously Bridget's
sister.
Dan owned the bar at the corner of 29th and Delores in San Francisco, called the "Dolores Inn." The city complained there were too many bars in the area, and the name of the bar was changed to "The Dolores." Dan retired in 1954. The bar was sold to Jerry Butler and the name of the bar was changed to "Jerry Butler's." Currently, the bar is named O'Greenberg's and is billed as an Irish Pub.
Dan and Bridget had 3 daughters.
Abina Margaret SULLIVAN, born 12 October 1920. Abina never married. Abina passed away on 14 August 2007.
Helen Mary SULLIVAN, born 1 October 1922 in San Francisco. Helen married Raymond James Whelan
Mary Cecelia SULLIVAN, born 1 May 1924 in San Francisco. Cecelia married James McElearney
