Information about the SS Arabic
The SS Arabic was to be named the Minnewaska, but by the time it was completed, the name was changed to the Arabic.
It was built by Harland & Wolff, Ltd., Belfast, Ireland. Tonnage: 15,801.
Dimensions: 600' x 65' (615' o.l.). Twin-screw, 16 knots. Quadruple
expansion engines. Four masts and one funnel.
The Arabic was launched, December 18,
1902, and its maiden voyage was from Liverpool to New York, departing
on June 26,
1903. She made her first Liverpool to Boston sailing in 1905. Just a
couple months after the sinking of the Lusitana by the Germans in 1915,
a German uboat torpedoed her about 50 miles south of Kinsale, on her
way to the USA, and
she sunk off the south Irish coast, August 19, 1915, with the loss of
44 lives.
