Alexander MONARD & Agnes
Alexander MONARD was born 10 September 1813 in Melrose, Scotland, the son of Margaret HOPKIRK and John Baptist MENARD
The next day, 11 September 1813, Alexander was baptised in Melrose, Scotland. Here is an enlarged view of the important details of the Baptismal record..
On 13 April 1834 Alexander MENARD
married Agnes RODGER at St. Boswells, Roxburghshire, Scotland, then 3
days later, on 16 April 1834, Alexander MENARD married Agnes ROGER at
Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland. It was not uncommon to have two
services, one at the bride's home town and one at the groom's home
town. Since we know that Melrose is the groom's home town, St. Boswells
must be the home town of Agnes RODGER
From the 1841 Scottish census we find
the following family living in Hutchesontown, Lanarkshire at 14 Rose
Street: Alexr Maynard, age 27, a Bootmaker; Agness Maynard, age 27, a
Book Binder, Ann Maynard, age 5; James Maynard, age 3; and Margaret
Maynard, age 1.
From the 1851 census at St. Anne Soho,
Middlesex we find Alexander Monard, bootmakeer, age 37, his wife Agnes,
age 37, and children Ann, age 14, James, age 12, Mary, age 10, and
William, age 8. All 6 individuals were born in Scotland.
Alexander Monard and Agnes, last name possibly Rogers, had the following children:
Ann MONARD, born
about 1836, probably in Melrose, since her parents were married in
Melrose in 1834 and her younger brother James was born in Melrose
around 1838.
James Hopkirk
MONARD,
born about 1838 in Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland. (See James'
1911 census record for his birth location) He was named after his great
grandfather James Hopkirk
Mary MONARD, born about 1841 in Scotland, probably in Hucheson, Lanarkshire, Scotland, because she was in the 1841 census there.
William MONARD, born about 1843 in Scotland
From the 1861 census we find the following family members all born in Scotland and living in Westminster: Alexander Monard, age 46, Bootmaker; Agnes Monard, wife, age 47, William Monard, age 19, Lithographer; and
others in the household are David Sherif, Boarder, age 24, Bootmaker;
James Lyrul, boarder, age 26, Bootmaker; and James Rankin, Boarder, age
21 Bootmaker. All boarders born in Scotland.
On 4 November 1889 Alexander's Aunt
Mary(Mally, Molly) HOPKIRK(1799-1889) passed away in Melrose. and
Alexander MONARD was one of 4 people named as executors of Aunt Mary's
estate. Alexander was the only named Executor still living at Mary's
death. Two were "writers" in Melrose, and the third was her brother
James Hopkirk, resident of Jedburgh. See this page from Mary's Will. that lists the Executors. From this next pages of Mary's will we confirm that Mary's father's will was dated 21 January 1836 and recorded after his
death(June 1841) on 6 August 1842. As mentioned in Isabella Home
Hopkirk's letter of June 30, 1841, it wasn't until after
James(1756-1841) death did they know there was another will created
after Mary's mother Anne Wright Hopkirk's death in 1833. Also, the
proceeds of Mary's estate are to be divided into 5 equal shares: 1/5 to
brother William's(1781-1857) children, 1/5 to brother James(1784-18??)
children, 1/5 to brother David's children, 1/5 to brother Walter's
children, and......
Pages 13 and 14 and the remaining 1/5 share going to sister Margaret's son Andrew Monard, shoemaker of London. We
have no idea what happened to Aunt Mary's Estate after her passing. At
the time of Aunt Mary's death, there were still three of William's
children(first cousin's of Alexander Monard) living, all outside of
Scotland, namely William Hopkirk(1811-1892) living in Lockridge, Iowa,
Robert Hopkirk(1816-1900) living in Wellington, New Zealand and
Alexander Hopkirk(1823-1907) also in Wellington, New Zealand. We
believe Alexander Hopkirk(1823-1907) had been in contact with his Aunt
Mary, but we have few records of William(1811-1892) or
Robert(1816-1900) doing as much writing. It would have been easier for
Alexander Monard to contact the children of of his Uncle's James, David
and Walter, since most of their children were still in Scotland. We
don't believe any of William's children were contacted after the
passing of Aunt Mary.
We hope to determine what happened to the James Hopkirk(1756-1841)
family home after the passing of Aunt Mary. Was it sold and the
proceeds distributed to the heirs?
From the 1891 Census
we find Alexander Monard, married, age 77, a shoemaker, born in
Melrose, Roxbughshire, Scotland; Helen McKay, single, age 33,
granddaughter, Housekeeper, born London, St. Georges; Eleanor
Reed, single, age 29, a Mount Binder, born in London, St. Georges.
