Robert HOBKIRK was christened 12 July 1801 in Ancrum, the third child of Walter HOBKIRK & Beatrice DUNLOP.
Margaret ROXBURGH was born 4 April 1802, the daughter of John ROXBURGH. Since all the male children of Robert and Margaret followed the Scottish naming tradition of the first son being named after the father's father and the second son being named after the mother's father and the third son being named after the father, it is probably safe to assume that the first daughter was named after the mother's mother. Therefore, Janet was probably the name of Margaret's mother. This assumption has now been confirmed. Margaret's mother was indeed named Janet. Margaret ROXBURGH's death certificate confirms her parents as John ROXBURGH and Janet WILSON. John ROXBURGH and Janet WILSON were married on 4 June 1801 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire. The informant on the death certificate was the eldest daughter, Janet HOBKIRK BALLANTYNE.
Robert HOBKIRK was a coal merchant by trade.

movement.)
