John HOBKIRK & Ann HANN

John HOBKIRK was the son of George and Rebecca HOBKIRK

John was christened 3 September 1843 at Tanfield, Durham, England.

From the "Newcastle Courant" of 28 August 1863 we find the following(thanks to the research of Glenys Bolland) "HOBKIRK, John (Mr.) married Miss Ann Hann at Sunderland Parish Church on 25 August 1863."

As of the 1881 census this family's dwelling place was Burnhope, and the census location was Holmside, Durham, England.

Following is the info from the 1881 census, all family members were listed as born in Lanchester, Durham, England:

John HOBKIRK, age 38, head, married, occupation was "Deputy Overman"

Ann HOBKIRK, age 36, wife, married

Isabella HOBKIRK, age 13, daughter, unmarried, scholar

Mary Eliz HOBKIRK, age 10, daughter, unmarried, scholar

Annie HOBKIRK, age 2, daughter, unmarried(she is listed as Amy in the 1881 census, "Amy" is probably a mistake)

John GREENER, age 19, son-in-law, married, Coal Miner

Rebecca GREENER, age 17, daughter, married

Hannah Alderson, age 15, visitor, unmarried, born in Crook, Durham, England.

From the 1871 census, John U Hobkirk is 27, a Coal miner, married to Ann, age 25, Rebecca age 7, Isabella age 3 and Mary Ellen 12 months.
Also in the household is Margaret Hann, age 16, probably a sister of Ann. They are living Twizell, Durham.
John U Hobkirk is listed as being born at Sheriff Houndon, Durham, England

From the 1891 census, John is 47, a Coal Miner, Ann is 45, Mary E is 20, Annie is 12 and John G. HOBKIRK is 8.
The family is living at High Heworth, Durham.

As of the 1901 census, John and Ann HOBKIRK were still alive, living in Heworth.

Since the oldest known daughter is named Rebecca, after the father's mother, it is probable there is an older sister named after the mother's mother.
