William HOBKIRK was probably the son of George HOBKIRK & Elizabeth (Betty) SCOTT
We have three reasons to believe our William Hobkirk was the son of George
HOBKIRK & Elizabeth SCOTT.
First, William HOBKIRK was a Shepherd by Occupation, as was George
HOBKIRK.
Second, Scottish naming tradition is to name the first son after the father's
father. Notice that there are two Georges. The first must have died in infancy.
They really wanted to have a George in the family. The Ellen/Helen naming
may be the same issue for the mother's side of the family. See children
below.
Third, family traditon says this dwelling at
Hawkloss,
Cavers, is the ruins of the family home from the 1700's.

Cavers.
William HOBKIRK, a Shepherd at Borthwickshiels Roberton, and Janet SMITH, a Servant at Branxholm Braes Farm Newmill-on-Teviot were married at Humbleknowes Mill Newmill-on-Slitrig, Hawick on 8 December 1865.
William HOBKIRK and Janet SMITH had the following known children:
George HOBKIRK, born 27 October 1866 at Edgerson, Roxburghshire
Ellen HOBKIRK, born 22 December 1867 at Edgerston, Roxburghshire
William Smith HOBKIRK, born 10 May 1871 at Leitham, Southdean
George HOBKIRK, born 1872 at Edgerston, Jedburgh(Per family records)
Thomas HOBKIRK, born 1874 at Edgerston, Jedburgh(Per family records)
Helen HOBKIRK, born 1876 at Edgerston, Jedburgh(per family records)
William HOBKIRK died in Hawick in 1913.
Janet SMITH died in Hawick in 1906.
